Why I Wrote The Fracture

History often remembers wars through battles, dates, and famous leaders. What has always fascinated me are the ordinary people who were caught in the middle—families forced to choose between loyalty and survival, cultures struggling to preserve their identity, and individuals whose courage shaped history without ever appearing in a history book.

When I began writing The Fracture, I wanted to explore one of the most turbulent periods in American history through the lives of people whose stories are rarely told. The French and Indian War and the years leading toward the American Revolution transformed an entire continent, yet behind every historical event were men and women trying to protect the people they loved while navigating a world changing around them.

As I researched the Mohican people, colonial settlements, military campaigns, and the political tensions of the eighteenth century, I became increasingly convinced that history is never simply a struggle between heroes and villains. Every side believes it is fighting for something worth preserving. Every decision carries consequences that extend far beyond a single lifetime.

This novel also became the natural continuation of the larger story that began in Where the River Divides. The invisible thread connecting generations is tested as the world fractures around it. Characters inherit more than names and traditions—they inherit choices, sacrifices, and legacies they often do not fully understand.

My hope is that readers will experience this period of history not simply as a series of wars and revolutions, but as the deeply human story of people searching for hope, love, and purpose during extraordinary times. If readers finish this novel seeing the past—and perhaps even their own lives—with greater compassion and understanding, then I will have achieved exactly what I set out to write.
