Why I Wrote Where the River Divides

History has always fascinated me—not because of the dates or the battles, but because of the people. Every generation is shaped by ordinary men and women who are forced to make extraordinary decisions, often without knowing how those choices will echo through time.

When I began writing Where the River Divides, I wanted to step beyond the familiar version of America's beginnings. Rather than telling the story from only one perspective, I wanted readers to experience the hopes, fears, and humanity of both the English settlers struggling to survive and the Native people whose world was changing forever.

As I researched Jamestown and the Powhatan Confederacy, I discovered that history is rarely as simple as we are taught. It is filled with courage and fear, compassion and betrayal, sacrifice and forgiveness. The more I learned, the more I realized that the most compelling stories are often found in the gray areas between right and wrong.

But this novel became more than a historical adventure. It became the beginning of something much larger.

Where the River Divides introduces the invisible thread that connects lives across centuries. While each book in the trilogy stands on its own, together they explore a question that has fascinated me for years: Can the choices of one life continue to shape another long after that life is gone?

My hope is that readers will not only become immersed in seventeenth-century Virginia but will also find themselves reflecting on their own lives—the relationships they build, the sacrifices they make, and the legacy they leave for future generations.

If this story encourages readers to see history not as distant events but as the lives of people remarkably similar to ourselves, then I will have accomplished what I set out to do.
